Anelemmatic Sundial  (see photos)

The Analemmatic Sundial requires a person to complete it, because the person supplies the shadow. Seventeen short vertical posts mark the hours of the day from six am to nine pm. The oval slab the lies at the heart of the hour markers is itself marked with lines that indicate the beginning of each month. The sundial is activated when a person stands upon the slab at the approximate date of the year, and then the shadow of that person points to the hour of the day.

Sun, sky, earth, and self thus drawn into close accord.
