Protestant Art: Ascension (see photos)

Ascension is a private devotional image unique in its two-sided configuration. One side depicts Christ in His very last moment on earth, dressed in robes, standing on the mountain-top, with his final earthly utterance, “I will be with you always,” captioned in the banner beneath Him. On the reverse side, the sculpture depicts Christ clothed in a diaphanous gown, mystically translated into the spiritual realm. This image contemplates Christ’s human and divine natures at the moment of ascension.
