Carved Icons have maintained a valued place in the history of Orthodox
art from the very earliest years of Christianity. Carvings of Holy
Images in marble and ivory attained a high level of spiritual artistry
in the tenth and eleventh centuries. Most churches employ two-dimensional
Icons rendered in paint and mosaics for public veneration, but a
steady demand for private devotional images carved in bas-relief
continues to keep the tradition not only alive but also thriving.
To date, I have carved one Icon for public use in a church, a life-sized
image of Sts. Cyril and Methodius for their namesake church in Perryville,
Connecticut.
The other carved Icons in this section have all been created for
private devotion.
