This Orthodox Church in America parish commissioned a wood carving
of their patron saints partly as a way of reaffirming a tradition
of carved Iconography that their forebears brought to America from
Russia, where the practice had thrived for centuries. The parish
placed the Icon above the main entry of the Church building.
Because of its exterior location, we selected Mahogany as the material
best suited for an outdoor Icon and treated it with marine epoxy
and marine varnish to further protect it from the elements. This
Holy Image has now weathered seven winters with only minimum routine
maintenance.
