Ann Arbor, Michigan (see
photos) The First Presbyterian Church asked for an image to
add Christian thought and symbolism to the blank wall of the lobby
and to harmonize with the existing architecture. To achieve these
goals, I combined two powerful symbols.
The starburst symbol of the sun as fire and light has primordial
roots. I grafted this archaic image to the Celtic Cross, sized it
to fit the narthex wall, and fashioned it of the Church's dominant
wood, oak. In this image, the primary symbol of the Christian faith,
the Cross, stands center-most and foremost, the starburst radiating
from it and echoing upon it. For me, this image illuminates a text
whose author I do not know, "The last day of Revelation will
read what the first day of Genesis has writ."
