Waupaca, Wisconsin (see
photos)
In Waupaca, I created an absolutely unique reredos in the form
of two virtually life-size oak trees carved in relief, whose trunks
are composed of fourteen life-sized relief carved renditions of
Holy people from the Old Testament, the New Testament, and contemporary
life.
The left hand tree - “The Tree of Judah” - consists
of Old Testament Saints. Sarah and Abraham form the tree trunk emerging
from the ground. They are surmounted in turn by Moses the Lawgiver,
King David, his grandmother Ruth, Prophet Isaiah, and St. John the
Baptist.
The right hand tree -“The Tree of Christ” - begins at
its roots with the New Testament figures, Saints Peter and Paul.
They are surmounted in turn by St. Isidore the Farmer and then by
four people not yet officially sainted - Bishop Oscar Romaro, Dorothy
Day, Pope John XXIII, and Mother Theresa.
