The Protestant Church, like the Catholic, sets the highest possible
historical standards for beauty and craftsmanship in religious art.
One must think only of powerful personal visions of the Gospels
created by Rembrandt or the ardent piety of Vincent van Gogh. The
Protestant Church, in keeping with its historical break from traditional
forms of worship, often calls upon the liturgical artist to create
imagery of great originality with little or no traditional precedent.
