The Seasonal Sundial is the least conventional of my solar sculptures.
In fact, it only works four times a year—but four very auspicious
times of the year— the beginning day of each season—the
Summer and Winter Solstices and the Spring and Autumnal Equinoxes.
And it only works at high noon on those nodal points of time.
Three elliptical apertures pierce the vertical plane. On the longest
day of the year, the topmost aperture projects a perfect circle
of sunlight onto the disc nearest it on the horizontal plane. On
the shortest day of the year, the lower aperture projects a perfect
circle of light onto the farthest horizontal disc. On the two equinoxes,
the middle aperture illuminates the middle disc. This therefore
is a sculpture dedicated to the middle of the day on the midpoints
of the year.
