In 1994, the Washington National Cathedral invited me to be its Artist-in-Residence. As I worked in the Cathedral carvers’ studio on my own projects, Richard Feller, Canon Clerk of the Works, commissioned me to carve four angels that would be set in a podium that had been built in 1922 by master craftsman, Angelo Lualdi.

The style of master Lualdi’s work, like the style of the Cathedral itself, is High Gothic. I designed the Angels accordingly.

I chose for my theme the idea of spiritual harmony, so each angel plays upon one of the major types of musical instrument, the harp for strings, the shepherd’s pipe for woodwinds, the trumpet for horns, and the bells for percussion.
